ARE YOU LIVIN IT?
These pro skaters and bikers are masters of their sports, yet they bow to the Master of the universe. And they’re challenging Breakaway guys to follow their moves: Instead of letting your faith blend in with the crowd, get out there and start LIVIN IT for Christ!

by Stephen Baldwin

Your jaw drops as pro skater Elijah Moore catches big air down a flight of steps and flawlessly reconnects with his board.

Next, the 25-year-old Texan roars past you, making his board dance with some fancy footwork. First, he pulls off the pop shove it, followed by the frontside halfcab kickflip (a couple of respectable skateboarding tricks). Then he launches into some serious liptricks and grinds that separate the men from the boys: the fingerflip disaster, the nosepick and the switch noseslide 270 shove-it out.

Just when you think your eyes are going to pop right out of your head, Elijah does something even more courageous: He steps up to a mike and begins to share his faith in Jesus Christ.

“I love this sport, but it’s not what I’m all about,” Elijah says to a crowd that has gathered at a mobile skatepark. “Knowing, serving and living for Jesus is my greatest passion.

“In fact, the Bible says that ‘we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do’ (Ephesians 2:10). As His workmanship, I’m skatin’ it, preachin’ it and livin’ it for Him.”

You just experienced LIVIN IT — an international tour, as well as two DVDs I created that feature edgy skaters and BMX riding. But at its core is evangelism. LIVIN IT is all about reaching your friends in a way that’s totally different and relevant.

OK, I know what you’re thinking: How did a Hollywood actor end up having a heart for sharing Jesus Christ? It’s all because of one amazing thing: God changed my heart.

Today my faith in Him — my whole reason for living — is all about sharing Christ with the world, especially with those who don’t fit into the mainstream. You know who I’m talking about: the young, tattooed, pierced crowd that hungers for God, yet who wouldn’t set foot in a church because, well, they feel different.

So LIVIN IT is bringing church to them. And that’s where Breakaway fits in.

Believe me, all this high-flying, adrenaline-filled, insane action was created just for guys like you — and your friends. As you watch these athletes pull off amazing stunts on the ramps, you can’t help but grit your teeth. One wrong turn, one bad landing, one loose strap — and these guys can get creamed.

You also catch yourself wondering, What does eternity hold for these guys? (After all, they can’t cheat death forever, right?) Actually, the skaters and bikers on the tour know exactly what’s in their future: heaven. These guys go big, but live for a BIGGER purpose — to serve Jesus Christ.

But don’t just take my word. Meet some of my friends. Then learn how you can use the DVDs, the tour and your own abilities to reach your friends for Christ.

ELIJAH MOORE
Skater: this Texan brings smooth style and technical skills to his sport
How he’s LIVIN IT: “I discovered skateboarding when I was just 2 years old. The first boarder I ever met was a brother like me. He really turned me on to the sport. But as a young man, I knew I was made for more. One day, I cried out to the Lord, asking Him to make me the person He wants me to be. Looking back, I’m amazed by all that God has done in my life, especially where He is taking me. The greatest thing I want people to know is this: God can be trusted.”

JON GREER
BMX Rider: dirt-jumping pro who has made the cover of Ride BMX magazine
How he’s LIVIN IT: “I’ll tell anybody riding their bike or skateboarding for their own glory that it’s not going to last. Their knees will give out, and they’re not going to make people think they’re so rad anymore. It’s nothing unless you’re following God and using your gifts to glorify Him.”

LUKE BRADDOCK
Skater: fast and goes big with an aggressive surf style
How he’s LIVIN IT: “Here’s what I tell people everywhere I skate: Jesus Christ wants to have a personal relationship with you. He wants you to live life to the fullest. The only way you can receive this is admitting that you have sinned and that you need Him to save you. He’s not going to force himself upon you. He gave us the freedom of a free will, and we have to choose to love Him.”

JOSHUA KASPER
Skater: a 20-year veteran of the sport and the perfecter of his signature trick, the 360 Flip
How he’s LIVIN IT: “As a kid, I was so empty inside. I tried to fill the void with alcohol and cigarettes. All along the answer to real life — true fulfillment — was right in front of me. I gave my life to Jesus Christ in 2003, and now I have a new purpose: glorify Him through my sport, my speech — every ounce of my being.”

MIKE MANCUSO
BMX rider: X Games veteran
How he’s LIVIN IT: “I like how BMX superstar Dave Mirra describes this sport: ‘It’s more about lifestyle and individualism. Nobody’s trying to be like anybody else. Everybody tries to be themselves.’ This is how I try to live my faith. God made me a one-of-a-kind individual with unique gifts and abilities. Scripture says, ‘The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ’ (1 Corinthians 12:12).”

How YOU Can LIVE IT in Your Town

Wouldn’t it be cool if Breakaway guys followed these athletes’ examples and used their abilities to witness for God?

Here’s an idea: Take inventory of your skills and interests, even the stuff you do for fun — then use them as tools for God.

Bottom line: Discover ways of allowing the Holy Spirit to touch others through your lifestyle — instead of just blending into the crowd. “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).

Check out how some guys and girls are using their talents as a launching pad for truth at school, at work and on the playing field:

• LIVE IT through music: Brian, 21, of Paris, France, sings in coffee houses and at festivals. “My family are missionaries in France. People in this country don’t easily trust strangers — especially the church. But I’ve discovered that my music breaks down barriers — and even allows me to preach a sermon.”

• LIVE IT through service: Kirsten, 17, of Los Angeles volunteers at animal shelters throughout Southern California. “I work with a group that cares for stray animals. I do my best to demonstrate Christ’s love through my actions, as well as my compassion for His creation. And every day, He opens doors for me to witness.”

• LIVE IT through sports: Susan, 18, of Denver is a serious rock climber. “My attitude means everything during competition. All eyes are on me — so I do my best to behave as Jesus would.”

• LIVE IT through entertainment: Jordan, 22, of Orlando, Fla., is a skilled puppeteer. “The arts are so neglected by Christians. It’s truly a mission field. I witness daily through my walk — the way I treat others and my integrity.”

• LIVE IT through adventure: Will, 16, of Dallas is an avid outdoorsman. “Hand me a backpack and put me on a trail somewhere deep in the wilderness, and I’m a happy man! It’s amazing how the wilderness can open doors for conversations about Christ. Each summer, I go on outdoor treks. I do my best to point others to the fingerprints of God.”
