DECK THE HALLS WITH CHRISTMAS CDS
Nothing gets you more in the Christmas spirit than holiday carols. Here are five new albums—plus a free download—that will help bring joy to your world.

by Jeremy V. Jones

Christmas without the music? Bah, humbug! Traditional carols and holiday classics are the best part of the season for many music fans. What can better whisk you away to the manger scene long ago to sing along with the herald angels or warm your heart as you’re walking in a winter wonderland?

Music is a celebration. The best of the Christmas collection gives song to the true meanings of the season: love, sacrifice, giving and worship. And there’s nothing better to sing about than Jesus our Lord humbling himself to enter our world long ago so that we can know Him today.

Many Christian artists are lifting their voices for just that reason and creating Christmas collections so you can share the joy. Here’s a list of some new releases and classic favorites. Fa la la la la, la la la la.

LET IT SNOW BABY . . . LET IT REINDEER

Gotee Records

The boys have blended some new tunes and old favorites, and the collection will keep you bouncing between heartfelt reflection and all-out celebration. Highlights include the thankful “Merry Christmas, Here’s to Many More,” the rockin’ “Handel’s Messiah (The Hallelujah Chorus),” the worshipful “I Celebrate the Day” and the Chipmunks-inspired “Auld Lang Syne.”

Jars of Clay

CHRISTMAS SONGS

Nettwerk Music Group

This is the first holiday release in the band’s 12-year career—and the first on Jars’ newly formed label. The band brings new light to memorable Christmas songs such as “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” and breaks new ground with originals of their own, including “Winter Skin” and “Evergreen.” The musicians have even written an accompanying book (sold separately) telling tales of their favorite Christmases past.

Michael W. Smith

IT’S A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS

Reunion Records

It’s no secret that Michael W. Smith loves orchestral arrangements. Apparently, that’s never more true than at Christmastime. For this, his 20th album, he enlisted the help of four choirs and a 67-piece orchestra. All but “What Child Is This?” are original songs. Some have vocals. Some are instrumental. Most carry an epic, cinematic quality.

CHRISTMAS: FROM THE REALMS OF GLORY

BEC Recordings

The opening track, “Come and Worship,” serves as an invitation to turn our holiday attention to the Lord. The rest—classics including “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” and “Joy to the World” plus originals such as “Born to Die”—encourage listeners to view Christmas through a heavenly perspective.

BETHLEHEM SKYLINE

Centricity Records

Who doesn’t love Christmas compilation albums? This one mixes old and new from the likes of Downhere, Circleslide, Jason Gray and more. The collection strikes a relaxing-at-home-for-the-holidays tone. One standout is Downhere’s “Glory to God in the Highest,” which was inspired as the band rode camels in Morocco. logo
