BLOOD AND WATER = LIFE OR DEATH
Jars of Clay is fighting AIDS in Africa. You can help.

Blood and water are sources of life, but Africa's lack of clean blood and clean water is killing millions. Jars of Clay is inviting fans to join them in trying to change that. The band formed the Blood:Water Mission in 2003, a foundation to provide HIV/AIDS and community health relief in Africa.

According to Jars, it doesn't take much to make a big difference. "One U.S. dollar provides clean water for one African for one year," keyboardist Charlie Lowell says.

The latest Blood:Water effort is the 1,000 Wells Project, a campaign to build 1,000 fresh water wells in villages across Africa. Since February 2005, 100 wells have been begun or completed in Kenya, Malawi, Sudan, Uganda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Central African Republic, Nigeria and Zambia. The organization plans to construct 150 additional wells in 2007.

If water doesn't sound like a big deal, think again. Dirty water causes many illnesses that can ravage a community already struggling with poor nutrition and poor medical care. Many of those illnesses can kill a person already weakened by HIV/AIDS.
