HEY MIKE! I seem to be a chronic procrastinator! I try to do my homework, but I usually start part of it and don’t finish the rest or I wait until the last minute. Got any advice?

It sounds as if you already know what to do: (1) Finish what you start. (2) Stop waiting until the last minute to get started.
Now for the hard part: Actually doing what you know you need to do.
Take a look at my checklist below. As you read through it, do any of the issues I describe nail your circumstances? If so, follow through with the suggested solution.
Problem / Solution Checklist
Problem: I get bored with my assignments either because they’re too easy at times or they’re often way over my head. Solution: Talk to your parents and your teacher. Also, read “When You Have to Ask for Help” in your March 2008 print edition of Breakaway.
Problem: I feel distracted when I sit down to do my work. Solution: Change your environment. Shut off the TV or move to a quiet place.
Problem: I’m not very disciplined, and I don’t have a daily homework schedule. Solution: Ask your mom or dad to help you establish a consistent nightly routine. Allow them to keep you accountable. Also, read “Timely Time Management Tips” in the April 2008 print edition of Breakaway.
Problem: I have too much homework each night. Solution: Discuss this possibility with your parents. You may be right: Perhaps your teacher is piling on too many assignments. But this is a battle your parents will have to fight for you.
Problem: I’m just not motivated to do my work. Solution: Do some soul-searching and pray for answers. Are you too tired when you get home? Are you overcommitted? (Again, our article "Timely Time Management Tips" offers some great advice.)
