WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT SWEARING?
Can't stop cussing? Get Mike's advice.

by Michael Ross

HEY MIKE! I swear quite a bit and can’t seem to stop. In fact, I’ve been doing this since the fourth grade. Does the Bible really say anything about swearing?

—Anonymous

That’s like asking why sailors make such a big deal about the rudder of the ship. I mean, after all, the rudder is just a little piece of equipment, tucked down underneath the boat—most people never even see it.

But get this: That little rudder determines which way the entire ship turns! That’s why the Bible makes such a big deal out of speech. In fact, did you know that the two main centers of obedience to God are your heart and your mouth? That’s why David prayed,"May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord." He knew that if he could just get control over his heart and his mouth, he could keep his ship on course and avoid going "man overboard."

I suggest you look over these three passages related to swearing: Matthew 5:33-37, Ephesians 4:29 and Matthew 12:34-37. God takes this speech thing very seriously. logo
